Lorongandlane is a project by Katetws Gallery based in the state of Penang, Malaysia. The name is inspired by the many small lanes within the heritage town.
We walk the old 'lorong'(malay for 'lane') in town for a dose of nostalgia and create works in watercolour through curious observations of forgotten places. These paintings of old buildings hope to 'conserve' on paper a moment in time of the street life. Each heritage building facade is drawn in architectural style drawing resembling its original form. Through drawings, we let the old architecture tell their own story.
These old streetscapes are in constant change as they adapt to each generation. Each change is reflected in the building facade through alterations across time. Reading the building’s facades reveal stories of struggles and hopes. These unassuming shop houses have resisted gentrification and survived lifetimes. They are as significant historically as the grand mansions, if not more.
